I was told by a finings supplier that the reason isinglass is used is the type of collagen, the ease of processing (purity) and the cost/availability of the material.Stuart Howehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06824861810753081932noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5993007378997589817.post-36551155363563039502010-11-18T20:36:28.265+00:002010-11-18T20:36:28.265+00:00I've always been led to wonder how or why some...I've always been led to wonder how or why someone mixed a load of fish gall bladder extract into beer? And why get collagen, essentially one of the commonest proteins in the animal kingdom from a fairly obscure fish. I used to brew a vegan beer at previous brewery which had PVPP and silica hydrogel added to help remove yeast but this wasn't all that effective (2-3 days to approach brightness) and the brand was ditched. In my experience for crystal clear cask ale there is no substitute for fish guts.Stuart Howehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06824861810753081932noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5993007378997589817.post-89034431037478515262010-11-16T20:54:45.601+00:002010-11-16T20:54:45.601+00:00Stuart, have you ever tried another fining agent, ...Stuart, have you ever tried another fining agent, here in the states truly vegan beers have a wider market, so isinglass has been replaced with various silicates. It doesn't solve the main problem associated with cask ale in cellars which is turnover and the ingress of muck.

Thanks Stu, you're too kind.

Homebrewers are lucky that they have time to allow the yeast to find its own way to the bottom of the cask Terry. That, combined with moving the finished beer to a colder environment, usually seems to produce clear beer after a few days.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16091042360025308490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5993007378997589817.post-8345710823227783142010-11-15T13:57:12.329+00:002010-11-15T13:57:12.329+00:00top stuff as always Mr Howe.top stuff as always Mr Howe.Crown Breweryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06209404597552162037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5993007378997589817.post-55860512523531498962010-11-15T12:27:09.501+00:002010-11-15T12:27:09.501+00:00I'd be interested to read your thoughts on the...I'd be interested to read your thoughts on the calcium alginate gel beads.
